What is Osteoporosis?

Osteoporosis is a health condition that weakens bones, making them fragile and more likely to break. Other indications of the disease present in some older people, where it is more common, who develop a stooped posture indicating that the bones in the spine cannot properly support the weight of the body. While osteoporosis can affect men and women, women are more at risk because the hormone changes that happen at the menopause directly affect bone density.

There is no one cause of Osteoporosis, but the following factors may increase the risk:

  • Hormone and glandular disorders
  • Family history
  • Eating disorders
  • Long term lack of exercise

How is Osteoporosis treated?

Following assessment and diagnosis Jane will prescribe a bespoke programme of both bone-loading exercises to help strengthen density and clinical Pilates to improve muscle strength and tone and help improve posture and balance. It is important to maintain muscle to protect the bones and improving balance prevents falls, often a cause of fractures amongst sufferers of Osteoporosis.
